The Rudraksha fruit, produced by the Elaeocarpus ganitrus tree, is a round or oval berry-like fruit that turns from green to a deep bluish-purple as it ripens, earning it the nickname “blueberry bead.” The outer layer is soft and fleshy, while the inside contains a hard seed, known as the Rudraksha bead, which is used for spiritual and healing purposes. This inner seed features natural vertical grooves called “mukhis,” which determine the bead's type and properties. The fruit is not typically consumed due to its mildly bitter taste and is mainly harvested for the sacred seed it contains. The tree thrives in Himalayan regions and parts of Southeast Asia, with the Rudraksha fruit taking several years to mature and produce viable beads.
